Another Juneteenth Celebration!

Another Juneteenth Celebration!

On Sunday, June 16, the American Canyon Arts Foundation, in partnership with Brenda Knight Events, the City of American Canyon and with a grant from Napa County Arts & Culture Commission, produced the City’s third annual Juneteenth Celebration.

Held in the Main Street Park in American Canyon, we had over 800 in attendance.  The event started at 1pm with a Gospel Hour, featuring JaCoree Prothro, the North Bay Community Choir and the One Church’s Praise Singers and Zumba Praise Dancers.

After this introduction, Bow, Hammer, String got the crowd started with smooth jazz.  At 2:30, there was a brief program, with keynote speaker, Orlando Harris, making sure we were “clear on the assignment,” and Mayor Leon Garcia reading the City’s Proclamation on Juneteenth.  There were some additional brief remarks from ACAF President, Mark Joseph, and the first Black Mayor of American Canyon, Ben Anderson

From there, the crowd was entertained by the West Coast Caravan of Stars, playing blues, and then two tribute artists:  Nelson Blount and Kenny King Smith, singing classics from Luther Vandross and Barry White, respectively.

The show ended with Top Shelf, playing R&B tunes.  The event ended around 6pm.

Juneteenth is based on the date when Black Slaves in Texas finally heard of the Emancipation Proclamation, ending slavery in Confederate States.  The date was June 19, 1865, shortly after most of the fighting in the Civil War had ended.

Juneteenth was celebrated by African Americans for decades, but it was only in 2021 that it was finally recognized as a Federal Holiday by President Biden.
